St Peter and St Paul - Albury Park
About the Church:
St Peter and St Paul, is situated in the middle of the Albury Park estate and is a beautiful, ancient stone church located in a tranquil and peaceful setting next to the River Tilling. It is a church full of contrasts and surprises. The building itself dates from Saxon and Norman times. Further additions and extensions were made throughout the centuries, including the unusual shingled cupola over the tower which was built in the 18th century. The interior of the building is light and uncluttered and has a beautiful flagstone floor.
Other unique features include the fine door dating from the 13th century, a well-preserved painting of St Christopher from the 15th century, and various other intriguing monuments like a brass of John Weston, who died in 1440. The south chapel is in complete contrast to the rest of the church and was renovated in the 19th century by the famous Victorian architect Augustus Welby Pugin, as a mortuary chapel for the Drummond family. The chapel is lavishly decorated, with very intricate and detailed stained glass windows, painted walls and a fabulous blue painted ceiling, a fine example of the Victorians’ taste for richness and colour.
The churchyard is equally interesting, containing various monuments and during January and February is a mass of different varieties of snowdrops. The church was also heavily featured in the hit film, Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Ceremonies:
The Church is in the care of the Church’s Conservation Trust (CCT) and all events in the building are subject to their approval. The practical day to day running of the church (cleaning, flowers, etc) is in the care of the local Old Church Committee.
